About the Secretary of State
Florida Secretary of State Kurt S. Browning
Kurt S. Browning
Secretary of State Kurt S. Browning was named Florida’s Secretary of State by Governor Charlie Crist in December 2006. Before this appointment, Secretary Browning spent 26 years serving as the Supervisor of Elections for Pasco County. During his tenure as Supervisor of Elections, Secretary Browning was involved in Florida’s elections community through service as the President of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections; as a member of Governor Jeb Bush's Task Force on Election Procedures, Standards and Technology; and as a member of the State Planning Committee for the Help America Vote Act.

Secretary Browning is a native Floridian, and received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master's degree in Public Administration from the University of South Florida. His extensive community involvement in Pasco County includes service as President of Downtown Dade City Main Street, Inc., and involvement with organizations including the Boy Scouts of America and the Pasco County United Way.

Office History
The Office of the Secretary of State was created in 1845, under the Florida Constitution. The main responsibilities of the office included maintaining the states public records. The Secretary of State also served as the custodian of the state seal, which was impressed on documents to certify them as official.

As Florida's population grew in the 20th century so did the duties of the Secretary of State. In 1969, the Office of the Secretary of State was merged with several state agencies to form the Florida Department of State. As the head of the Department of State, the Secretary of State oversees a large state agency with many task and responsibilities.
